10. Britney Spears

While the iconic singer lost guardianship over her boys Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden James, 15, to ex Kevin Federline, currently the two have a 30-70 custody agreement.

That being said, “Britney and Kevin haven’t been exercising custody pursuant to the order — it’s sort of been what they agree to,” according to Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan. Britney’s recent, newfound freedom from her grueling conservatorship has not affected custody in any way.

9. Mindy Kaling

“Being a single mom is not for everyone,” Kaling, who is the mother of daughter Katherine,4, and son Spencer,1, said during a May 2021 #WOW2021 event. Kaling shared how she is “only able to do it” with the help of a full-time nanny and her retired dad. “We have this, like, little strange little house of intergenerational, interracial people that are coming in and out to take care of everything.”

8. Sandra Bullock

While Bullock shared three stepkids from her marriage to Jesse James, she currently is a single mother to her adopted son, Louis Bardo, who is now 12-year-old. Five years after adopting Louis, she then adopted daughter Laila, who is now 10-years old.

On a recent Today appearance, Sandra spoke on what is like to be a white parent raising Black children. “You know, as a white woman, I didn’t have to think about that until the day I fell in love like I did. You realize that there is a whole universe that you have to educate yourself to.”

7. Padma Lakshmi

In her memoir, the Top Chef host revealed how when she first became pregnant with her little girl Krishna in 2009 (who is now 11-years-old) she didn’t who know her daughter’s father was. She would go on to discover her dad was venture capitalist Adam Dell. “I was raised by a single mom. I was told I couldn’t have children, so every day I am kissing the sky with happiness about it,” she said of raising Krishna on her own.

6. Halle Berry

Halle Berry is a mother of two who shares her oldest child, Nahla Ariela Aubry, with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. While her second-born child is her son, Maceo Robert Martinez, who was born in 2013. Halle shares him with her ex-husband Olivier Martinez.

“I’ve learned a lot being with my children,” she said of Nahla, 13, and Maceo, 8, during her video chat with friend Lena Waithe. “They are the best company for me right now, and when I divorced Maceo’s dad I’ve been pretty alone by myself going on three years now — decidedly so, for sure.”

5. Charlize Theron

In 2012, Charlize adopted her daughters, Jackson,9, in 2012 and August,5, in 2015.

“I always knew I would adopt. Always,” the Oscar winner told Australia’s Madison magazine. “You know, I don’t think any mother aims to be a single mom. I didn’t wish for that, but it happened.”

4. Kate Hudson

“You know, I’ve got multiple dads, I’ve got kids all over the place,” Kate said to Sunday Today last spring regarding her now 3-year-old, Rani Rose, whom she shares with her partner, Danny Fujikawa. She is also mother to 10-year-old Bingham, whom she had with her ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy; and 18-year-old Ryder, whose father is her ex-husband, Chris Robinson.

“The only expectations I really have that are really high in my life is with my kids,” she said at the time.

3. Kristin Davis

Davis is a single mom to her kids, 3-year-old Wilson and 10-year-old sister Gemma, both of whom she adopted. 

“On the positive side, I don’t have to worry about my relationship, because I don’t have one,” she said in 2020 of single parenting. “But on the other hand, I don’t have a support for myself. I remember wishing I had someone to bounce ideas off of. Instead I would be by myself trying to figure it out with Google.”

“In parenting there are just so many unknowns,” she adds. “But you figure it out. As a mom, I wish I had been more trusting of my own instincts.”

2. Sheryl Crow

The singer-songwriter adopted her sons — Wyatt, now 14, in 2007, and son, Levi, now 11, in 2010 — on her own.

“It wouldn’t have been my first choice to do it by myself,” Crow, 58, told Yahoo Entertainment in 2020. “But to be perfectly honest, I feel like the way that my life has — I keep saying the way that it rolled out, but it really is true — the way things have happened for me have not been conventional.”

The single mother, actress and singer (whom she shares with Timothy J. Lea) says she always planned to be an older mom due to her commitment to her career.

She added of her now 12-year-old son, “I waited a long time to have children because I had this career that was kind of like my kid, it required as much nurturing. There’s no amount of hassle that could be bigger than my love of Henry.”
