12-Year-Old’s Leg Mauled After Saving Siblings From Charging Pit Bulls

12-year-old Deacon Ashmore was walking home from school last Monday afternoon with his friends and his three younger siblings when two dogs suddenly charged towards them.

It was when the dogs were rushing towards Ashmore that he quickly defended his siblings from the attack.

Afraid the canines would injure his two little sisters and one younger brother, he threw his body into the dogs.

“I kinda held off the dogs a bit,” he humbly admitted. His mother, Elisabeth Ashmore, expanded on the moment, saying:

“[He] jumped in front of all the other kids and made sure they could run home really fast before the dogs got them,” Ashmore shared. “But he ended up getting attacked.”

The mother witnessed the horrifying incident nearby, with one of the two pit bull mixes sinking their teeth into her son’s left calf and didn’t let go. Doctors say the bite was so deep that it pierced through muscle and tendon, going all the way down to the bone.

But that didn’t stop the 12-year-old.

“Bad dog! Bad dog!” Deacon was said to have yelled as he kicked his leg free from the dog’s jaw.

The incident was obviously traumatic and Deacon’s younger sister described seeing “guts…coming out of his leg.”

According to Deacon’s mother, this comes as no surprise — as the boy has always looked over his little siblings.

A GoFundMe page has since been set up in hopes of helping to cover the unexpected medical costs.

Currently, Deacon is recovering and okay, all things considered. Last Tuesday, Deacon went through surgery to repair the injured calf and allegedly, the procedure was a success.

Since being released from the hospital, despite his leg remaining in a case, he is able to get around on a pair of crutches.

The Ashmores share how they will continuing care in the weeks and months ahead, including physical therapy; but hopefully, they won’t have to worry about the bills that come along with that.
