14. “I’m going to load up an external hard drive with all her favorite movies. She and my father are about to move for the first time in 20 years, and she is upset they won’t have room for all her old VHS movies, so I’m going to give her digital copies she can have forever.”

13. “I would really love it if I woke up on Mother’s Day and say, the kitchen was clean. Or the laundry was washed and folded for me. Or my car was cleaned out. Or the yard was raked. I have a lot of stuff already. Buying stuff is easy. I do like getting presents but I know it’s a lot harder to clean up the house than it is to stop at Target and pick up a bouquet of flowers. Something not to do: Make breakfast for me and leave a big mess that I will have to clean up. Nothing bothers me more than that.”

12. “One year I was low on funds so I went to the thrift store and bought a vase. I bought a bouquet of flowers and got some ribbon and made my own flower arrangement. All you do is snip the end of the flowers and put them in the vase one at a time. If you choose a wider vase buy 2 different kinds. I spent 20 and it looked like a professional did it.”

11. “Originally, the woman who started Mother’s Day suggested the best gift was a white carnation and a heartfelt letter. (Will edit later with link to article/s because I’m communicating with you via potato). Last year my husband and I did this and both of our mothers said it was the best gift they have ever gotten on mothers day.”

10. “I made my mom a “mix tape” (cd) of songs that reminded me of her/our relationship – started with songs relating to when I was little and the last track related to our present day relationship. She told me she cried every time she listened to it – I cried while I was making it!”

5. “I had a lengthy response, but I think the best gift is spending real time with your parents, not showing up for a meal, handing over a gift, and estimating how much time you should ‘put in’ before leaving. If she lives far away then sacrificing some of your vacation time just to go see her would be the best gift. If she lives close, do something she would enjoy like shopping, a walk, outdoor concert, artsy movie, hiking (whatever she is into). If she doesn’t like doing things, just hanging out and having a ton of conversation is nice!”

4. “My girlfriend is creating coffee mugs with photos on them through shutterfly.com I think that’s the website. They’re cheap, like 6 bucks, and what mom doesn’t like to see her kids on a coffee mug every morning.”

3. “Do something mom taught you that you have some skill in now. (Knit a scarf, bake some cookies, make some homemade remedies and bottle them.) Include a card explaining why you made the gift.”

“Do a bonding activity! Help mom with organizing photos for her album or [scrap] book. Help her organize her recipe box. Stamp collection? She doesn’t have one? You probably have some collection or a computer full of photos you two can go through and start labeling and organizing. Tell tales about the photos that explain your life as you go. Set the day aside to do this and make her lunch and even go get things printed and buy a physical album with her input.”

2. “Most inexpensive and most meaningful Mother’s Day gift, hands down is a day off. As a mother of three kids, I would love nothing more than this: I wake up on my own, no kids poking me I the eye, no dogs barking to go out, no alarm clock ripping me from my slumber. Breakfast made for me. A cup of coffee, just how I like it. Nowhere to take the kids. Dad can handle getting them dressed and fed, just for today. I get to go work out at the gym, without hearing a so much as a single whimper. This is the life :)”

1. “Foot massages. I am dying for one of these and told my family that if they can’t do it for me, get in touch with my physical therapist because he does the absolute best job at it. I think if you read up on it and use the right lotions, you might make that mom you’re thinking of oh so happy. Plus it’s a very thoughtful and original idea.”
