Two young boys had to fend for themselves for days when their mother collapsed and died. According to CBS DFW, the boys were discovered and the mother was found after the boys’ school teachers reached out to police after they didn’t show up to school and his mother wasn’t responding to her correspondence for several days.
According to the teachers who notified police, the two boys hadn’t been in class since September 21. When police arrived at their home, the children “opened the door and told them that ‘their mom had passed out’ and was laying on the floor,” CBS DFW reports.

The boys told Police Chief Bill Carmack that they had tried to use a cell phone to call for help. But because it was protected with a password they didn’t have, they couldn’t use it.
And because they didn’t know their neighbors, they were afraid to go outside to look for help. They believed the safest option was just to stay inside and wait for help. According to the report, the boys remained healthy by eating food from the pantry and refrigerator.
After the two children were found healthy, Forney School District released this statement: “We are so thankful that our teachers are building relationships with families to know something wasn’t right, and for our officers that check in our families. Our hearts break with the family, and we are keeping them close in our thoughts and prayers.”
The cause of their mom, 71-year-old Connie Taylor‘s passing was natural, according to a local coroner. Sadly, as CBS DFW reported, Taylor only recently adopted the two boys who had spent time in foster care before she officially became their mother.

For now, the children are back with Child Protective Services. However, according to CBS DFW, one of Taylor’s adult children is working with CPS on getting custody.
