On April 12, 2019, Fisher-Price announced a voluntary recall of all models of their popular Rock ‘n Play Sleepers. 4.7 million units are included in the recall.
Fisher-Price made the announcement shortly after the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission issued a warning about the safety of the sleepers.
The CPSC says that 30 infants have died in the sleepers since 2009, when the product first hit shelves. 10 infants (all at least three months old) have died in the seat since 2015.
Infants have rolled over from their backs onto their sides or stomachs and suffocated after their faces become pressed against the sides or back of the product.
The sleepers, which vibrate to help soothe infants to sleep, include a safety harness. However, the deaths occurred when the infants were not properly strapped in.
In announcing the recall, Fisher-Price noted that the deaths occurred only when the safety instructions were not followed properly.
Still, we say better safe than sorry. If you have an infant, especially one that is already rolling over or about to start, make sure you don’t use the product without following the safety guidelines thorougly.
The popular product retailed for anywhere between $40 and $150 depending on the model and store. Amazon has already removed all listings of the Rock ‘n Play Sleeper from its website.
