Tales From Motherhood: How I Am Working Through Family Life with a Violent Stepson

A mom writes to us with her story of motherhood. She shares the toughest experience she’s faced as a mom, which involved an autistic stepson prone to violent outbursts that have traumatized her other children.

We reached out to the robust Mamas Uncut Facebook community and asked to hear stories from real moms about their experiences. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Our goal is to share these stories (anonymously, if the author so chooses) with our community as a reminder that we are not alone in either our joys or struggles.

Community member K.W. writes:

I have three boys: 1 stepson and 2 of my own.

My stepson was finally diagnosed with autism after several years of insisting he has services with his mom. The toughest thing that I have had to do is say that my stepson cannot come over due to violent behavior.

It isn’t like I don’t want him. We went to great lengths to ensure all were safe, including buying a video monitor so we could go to the bathroom should one of us parents be alone with the kids. It just was an unsafe situation altogether. I was judged by many people, but I had to make sure everyone was safe.

My stepson is doing better now, has medication, is waiting to get a BHP, and seems to be doing okay at his school. We’re hoping to reintegrate the kids, but my oldest child is afraid of my stepson and has been to counseling regarding anxiety.

My breakthrough as a parent was learning to say “no” and “enough is enough.” We lived in a state of anxiety surrounding my stepson and his violent outbursts. The outbursts were dangerous, extreme, and unpredictable. I know so many people will say I didn’t want to work with my stepson, but that isn’t the case. We are still in the process of getting support for our home so that my stepson can learn skills. He’s on a faster road to getting supports he needs. I want all my children to achieve all that they can, regardless of disability or not.
