I’m 24 Weeks Pregnant and My Sex Drive Has Gone Way Down. Is This Normal?

A mom writes in asking for advice. She’s a first time mom and is currently 24 weeks pregnant. Her question: her partner seems to want sex even more now that she’s pregnant, but she’s finding that she often doesn’t feel up to it. She wonders if this is normal and what other moms did in this situation.

“I’m a soon to be first time mama and need advice on intimacy. My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and have had great intimacy. Fast forward, I’m 24 weeks pregnant and my sex drive has decreased. We still are intimate but not as much as we would be usually.

He says he is more attracted to me now that I’m pregnant and can’t keep his hands off of me. I don’t feel sexy at times and positions are getting hard. I feel bad because my boyfriend feels like I’m not attracted to him even though I constantly reassure him that I am. Any moms have this issue in their relationship? What helped?

Dear OP: the good news — everything you are experiencing is normal. Pregnancy hormones coupled with physical and emotional changes mean that intimacy and the desire to be intimate, often change from baseline during this time.

Commenters suggested that the OP try to embrace these changes instead of fighting against them. As one commenter said: “Kids change intimacy in relationships. Communicate with each other and accept the changes. Grow together. It gets easier.”

Other commenters suggested that the OP also try to embrace her changing shape and feel comfortable with her body as it is now. (Easier said than done, we know!)

Lastly, in terms of the boyfriend, commenters said to continue reassuring him about your feelings and to know that once the baby is here, it’s likely that after a period of adjustment, things will go back to normal.
