“I heard Demi screaming on the other line saying that Zariah’s dead, and I didn’t know what to do,” said Hasheme. “I mean, you can forget to bring a pen with you, but it’s kind of hard … to forget about a kid in the car.”

Their nanny, Tammy Brooks, was supposed to drop off their daughter at daycare, but went to work in Hobbs, New Mexico instead.

After running an errand, Brooks finally realized that Zariah was still in the car, but it was too late. Police and EMTs arrived and declared Zariah dead on the scene. Police have charged Brooks with abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death.
