Three Powder Baby Formulas Under Recall After 4 Babies Fall Ill

What should you know about the latest formula recall?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are three types of powder baby formulas affected by the recall – Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare. The recall was put into effect after four infants got sick after ingesting the formula.

“Abbott is voluntarily recalling these products after four consumer complaints related to Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in infants who had consumed powder infant formula manufactured in this facility.

Additionally, as part of Abbott’s quality processes, we conduct routine testing for Cronobacter sakazakii and other pathogens in our manufacturing facilities. During testing in our Sturgis, Mich., facility, we found evidence of Cronobacter sakazakii in the plant in non-product contact areas. We found no evidence of Salmonella Newport. This investigation is ongoing.”

How to know if your formula is affected?

Thankfully, there is a way to identify if the formula in your home has been contaminated. All you have to do is check the numbers on the bottom of the container.

If it starts with digits 22 through 37 and contains K8, SH, or Z2, or has an expiration of April 1, 2022, or later, it should be thrown out.

What happens after you toss your formula?
