A 6-year-old boy from South Carolina was mauled by a pit bull last week at his Branson home on January 26.
Cameron “Jayce” Hatfield was described as “highly intelligent, funny and always full of life.”
“He was and will always be greatly loved by countless family and friends,” according to a GoFundMe page set up by a family member.
“There is nothing that can ever explain the loss of a beautiful child at such an early age.”
Cameron was in kindergarten at Fennell Elementary School in Yemassee and adored nature, fishing, playing with his cousins along with paleontology and “could name most species of dinosaurs.”
Hampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were first notified on the afternoon of Jan. 20 “regarding a juvenile being attacked by a dog.”
According to a Hampton County Sheriff’s Office press release, the boy was found deceased.
Hampton County Animal Control additionally went to the home and located the dog, which was later euthanized.
The GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for a memorial and funeral.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division continues to investigate.
“The case remains open,” law enforcement division spokesman Tommy Crosby said in a statement. “At this time we don’t anticipate any charges being filed.”
