Ciara Reflects On Giving Birth to Son During Pandemic

Giving birth under the best of circumstances takes a lot of mental and physical strength. Giving birth in the middle of a pandemic? That takes things to a whole new level. Ciara recently did just that and opened up her experience giving birth in the time of Covid.

The singer gave birth to her third child, son Win Harrison, on July 23. Due to the pandemic, Ciara was required to wear a mask in the delivery room.

Ciara spoke to Self about how this birthing experience differed from her previous deliveries with her children Future Zahir, 6 1/2, and Sienna Princess, 3 1/2.

“My obstetrician, who’s delivered all my babies, was not playing any games about this COVID. I literally made my first push with Win and then he was like, ‘She needs a mask on. Get a mask on,’ ” she said. “It happened so fast, so I still had my mask [down]. But he was like, ‘Oh, no, no. She gon’ put that mask on.’ “

Ciara, who is married to Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, shared that while it was definitely a very different birthing experience, it wasn’t too uncomfortable.

“My mask was pretty good. I could still breathe alright through it, so that was good,” she said. “But it was like, ‘Wow. This is crazy. I’m having to deliver a baby with a mask. What in the world?'”

Other than having to don a mask, the birth went smoothly. Wilson was by her side throughout the delivery.

“He was like everything in one,” she told Access about her husband. “He was a cameraman, making sure the camera was set up right so we could get the angle when the baby comes out. And he actually helped pull Win out near the end, which was really sweet.”

“So we got some memorable moments,” she continued. “He [did skin-to-skin] with him. It was just very intimate and really full of love, more than anything. So I’m grateful for that.”
