In the first episode of their new podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, this week, Demi Lovato made the brave choice to come out as nonbinary, and tell the public they now use They/Them pronouns. In coming out, they are now one of the most prominent members of the nonbinary community.
At the very beginning of the podcast, they explain:
“Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and still am discovering.”
Lovato rose to fame as a child star within features and T.V. shows like Disney’s Camp Rock and Sonny with a Chance. Demi followed that early success with an impressive music career. As someone who has had to explore these more complex aspects of themself so publicly, especially given other traumas they endured, their confidence and poise in explaining their experiences is striking.
Lovato tempers their own story with the counsel that, “I want to make it clear that I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson,” as they are likely the first nonbinary person many have heard of.
However, in a tweet, Demi Lovato explained why they decided to come out at all.
“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones,” they wrote. “Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.”
They also address the question many have around how to approach someone changing their pronouns. “I think it’s important because I want to use these pronouns that feel right to me. …I also just don’t want people to be so afraid of messing up that they don’t try to use them.”
What’s important is the effort. In living their life honestly, Lovato opens more doors for others, and we at Mamas Uncut celebrate them for that.
