‘Dawson’s Creek’ Screenwriter Heidi Ferrer Dies At 50

Heidi Ferrer, the screenwriter who wrote episodes of Dawson’s Creek along with the 2008 Paris Hilton film The Hottie & the Nottie, has died. She was just 50-years-old.

Ferrer died by suicide on May 26 after a 13-month battle with long-haul COVID-19, according to her husband, Nick Guthe.

“The excruciating physical pain and inability to sleep from the pain led Heidi to the decision she would rather leave this world on her own terms before her condition worsened more,” he wrote on her Girl to Mom blog.

Ferrer worked with producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec back in 1999 by writing two episodes of The WB series Dawson’s Creek and one installment of ABC’s Wasteland. She also penned the 2008 ABC telefilm Princess, starring Nora Zehetner.

She was a member of the WGA for 24 years.

Born in Kansas on May 28, 1970, Ferrer moved to Los Angeles in the late 1980s and studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts prior to focusing on screenwriting and selling a spec script to Fox.

She then wrote an episode of the 2001 Sci-Fi Channel series Black Scorpion and appeared in the 2006 film Mini’s First Time, written and directed by Guthe.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her son, Bexon. Guthe penned the following heartfelt letter following her death to her blog.

“Never in a million years did I think that submitting her obituary to Hollywood news site Deadline.com would lead to what has happened in the last 48 hours,” Guthe began.

“I thought at best another trade publication might publish it. Needless to say, the amount of interest from media around the world has been heartening. Heidi’s story has touched many people and brought much-needed attention to those suffering from Long Haul Covid.”

“I’ve been asked to do several interviews and have agreed to as I know she was so desperate for help herself and to be heard by the medical community. She literally asked me weeks before her passing if she was felled by a heart attack or stroke to tell her story so others might avoid what was happening to her. I promised her I would.”

“I have learned a little about how this website works (I’m not a techie so I think she’d be proud) so if you feel inspired to leave a comment about anything related to her: How she helped, what was your favorite post, anything really, I will be able to read them and approve them … Lastly, if you can make a donation in her memory to the Infantile Scoliosis Outreach Project, you will be helping to save more lives like Bexon’s.”
