Sesame Street Proudly Introduces 2 Gay Dads And Their Daughter

Sesame Street is celebrating Pride Month by introducing their first gay characters, two dads, Frank and Dave, and their daughter, Mia.

In last week’s new episode, titled “Family Day,” the Sesame Street gang got to meet Frank and Dave.

Frank is played by Alex Weisman and Dave, Nina’s brother, is played by Chris Costa. Mia is played by Olivia Perez. The episode centers on Big Bird’s party, where he is unsure if his grandmother, Granny Bird, can attend. Director Alan Murokawa, who also works as the owner of Hooper’s Store on the famed street itself, talked about his passion for the project on Facebook.

He explains how “honored and humbled” he is to have been a part of such a momentous occasion for Sesame Street, and indeed families across America. He makes sure to emphasize that “Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!!!!”

Even organizations such as GLAAD see the importance of representation on Sesame Street. In a conversation with Yahoo! Entertainment, President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis explained that “The ‘Family Day’ episode of Sesame Street sends the simple and important message that families come in all forms and that love and acceptance are always the most important ingredients in a family.”

She continued “Frank and Dave, as Mia’s dads are the latest characters in an undeniable trend of inclusion across kids & family programming, one that allows millions of proud LGBTQ parents, and our children, to finally get to see families like ours reflected on TV.”

Sesame Street has shown support for the queer community before.

In June 2017, “Elmo’s World” celebrated Father’s Day by celebrating all types of families, explaining to its audience that “You might have a stepdad or even two dads.” Many queer guest stars have also appeared on the show, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Lil Nas X, and Billy Porter, who had some choice words for those who disapprove of queer people and characters on children’s TV.

In a conversation with Page Six, the actor said “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. What about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?” He continued, “The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex. Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine — that is none of your business.”
