While touching down at Ramstein Air Base in Germany aboard a US military evacuation flight, an Afghan mother delivered a baby girl this past Saturday.
According to a Twitter thread this past Sunday, the US Air Mobility Command revealed the woman went into labor aboard a C-17 transport aircraft during the second leg of her journey fleeing the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

The flight was from a staging base in the Middle East to the large US airbase in Germany.
Reportedly, medical support personnel assisted the Afghan mother, whose identity is unknown, with her family off a US Air Force C-17 transport aircraft just moments after she delivered a child aboard the aircraft upon landing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, this past weekend.
The US Air Force stated how the mother began to have complications while the aircraft was at its flight altitude — which is usually above 28,000 feet (8,534 meters), due to the lower air pressure in the plane.
“The aircraft commander decided to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilize and save the mother’s life,” said the tweet, which was sent from the US Air Mobility Command’s official account.

After the plane was on the ground at the Ramstein base, personnel from the Air Force’s 86th Medical Group assisted in the delivery of the baby in the C-17’s cargo bay, according to the Tweet. Mother and baby were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility where they are in good condition.
Per CNN, a group of Afghan evacuees departed on a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, on Aug. 20, 2021. Ramstein Air Base has been a transit point for evacuees from Afghanistan.
And since the end of July, a total of 22,000 people have been evacuated, according to Gen. Taylor. Of those, 17,000 have been evacuated since August 14. This past Friday, the Air Force revealed that one of its C-17 flights from Afghanistan had set a record for the number of people ever carried aboard the aircraft.
Air Mobility Command stated in a tweet how a flight on August 15, the Air Force originally said carried 640 people but it actually had 823 aboard. The initial count did not include the 183 children aboard the aircraft.
