Drew Barrymore recently divulged how she will be completely transparent to her daughters about her past.
On her daytime talk show, Barrymore shared, “I have become this mother that is ironically very chaste, very pillars-of-appropriateness — and I tell my daughters all the time, ‘The truth is, you’re going to find out that I wasn’t always like that and you’re gonna be uber-confused.”
Barrymore shared that when her daughters, 9-year-old Olive and 7-year-old Frankie, eventually “see pictures of me or my wild stuff” they will need to view them “in the terms of art and expression.”
She has already thought of a rebuttal to “Mom, look at what you did.”
“That’s the other thing — you don’t know you’re going to be a parent one day when you’re figuring it all out. None of us are like, ‘Well, you know, one day, this is going to be cataloged.’ I never thought about it. I was just living my life, trying to figure out who I was,'” she revealed.

She continued on, saying: “This is my favorite chapter of life. Parenting is the hardest and it’s the most challenging and it’s the most exhausting [thing], but it is the most fulfilling, eye-opening, incredible [experience].”
Barrymore shares Olive and Frankie with ex-husband Will Kopelman. The two were married from 2012 to 2016.
And when it comes to setting boundaries as a mother, Drew spoke on how it was her own mother that influenced her parenting style today.
On Demi Lovato‘s podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, Barrymore revealed how her own mother, Jaid, were friends, not “parent and child” growing up, which forced her to “completely relearn what parent-child dynamic is.”

“I’m having amazing real realizations about my own kids and how little I understood what boundaries were,” Barrymore shared.
“I didn’t have them growing up and when you’re a parent, you try to compensate with so much love and you’re almost afraid to get into the argument sometimes, you’re just trying to survive the day, so you let things slide and you’re like, ‘Oh, there should have been a boundary in that place probably a while ago but I guess I’m only realizing that now.’”
Barrymore leaned into the importance of boundaries — revealing she had previously told her daughters that she will “never be their friend.”
“Like, I’m your parent, I’m not your friend,” she explained, adding, “You can be friendly and do activities, it’s not that it has to be this strict relationship.”
