Drew Carey Reveals Final Conversation with Ex-Fiancée Amie Harwick Before She Was Murdered

UPDATE: Dr. Amie Harwick’s murderer has learned his fate.

Gareth Pursehouse has been sentenced to life in prison, three years after Harwick fell to her death. Pursehouse was found guilty of first-degree murder after he broke into Harwick’s house in 2020 and lay in waiting for Harwick to return. Pursehouse attacked Harwick when she arrived and threw her over a third-story balcony.

Pursehouse and Harwick reportedly dated years before the deadly attack.

Drew Carey revealed his final conversation with ex-fiancée, Amie Harwick publicly for the first time. In a preview for an upcoming CBS special, 48 Hours: The Final Hours of Amie Harwick, the Price Is Right host shared that he had exchanged text messages with Harwick just before her murder in February of 2020.

Harwick, who was just 38 at the time of her death, sent Drew Carey a text message stating that she wanted to meet up to talk.

Amie Harwick Requested Drew Carey’s Company to Have a Chat.

“I got a text from her [that said], ‘I would love to get together with you and talk,'” Carey says in the CBS interview. “And I said, ‘Yeah, I would love to do that. I love you.'”

The interview, conducted by Erin Moriarty, took a somber tone following Carey’s admission. The CBS journalist asked Carey if he felt “sad” about never getting to have the meeting that Harwick requested.

“I never got it,” he said emotionally. “I never had a chance to do it.”

Moriarty reminded Carey that he was loved to which he replied, “That’s the big solace I get from it, is that she loved me […] And, I’m glad I could get that message to her before she died.”

Harwick, who was a sex therapist and author of The New Sex Bible for Women, and Carey were engaged in 2018 before calling it off later that same year.

Harwick’s murder followed two years later. In the early hours of February 15, 2020, she died after being attacked and thrown off of a balcony in Hollywood Hills, California. Investigators allege that Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, is responsible for the murder.

Police charged Pursehouse with burglary and her murder, alleging the 41-year-old waited outside her home for her to return before attacking the sex therapist inside her apartment. Prior to her death, Harwick had been granted two restraining orders against Pursehouse.

Since being charged, Pursehouse has pleaded not guilty for her murder.

Shortly after her untimely death, Carey spoke with People about the tragedy. “Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime,” he told the outlet.

“She was a positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist,” he explained at the time. “I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation.”

Carey went even further, bringing himself to tears, on his SiriusXM show Drew Carey’s Friday Night Freak-Out. He described how his love endured for Harwick even after their engagement had been called off.

“Back in September 2018, I was in a beautiful, great, best relationship of my life with a woman named Amie Harwick,” he told listeners of his program. “She was a sex therapist and mental health advocate. She had a Ph.D. and a master’s degree, and she was beautiful and fun, and cared deeply about people and improving their lives, and was just a joy to be around. I was so in love with her.”

“Even after we broke up, we still loved each other very much,” he continued. “Even though we broke up the engagement, I was still so in love with her. And she loved me back.”

After two years since Harwick’s passing Drew Carey told 48 Hours that Valentine’s Day will never be the same.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever want to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a dinner. You know? I just don’t want to do anything. Valentine’s Day sucks now. That’s not a good day to remember,” he told Moriarty. “I think about her every single day. You want an intimate relationship where you can open up to somebody completely and be yourself. And she was that for me.”

“She cared so much about helping people,” Carey also shared. “That was her life’s purpose. She just wanted to help people. Especially women.”

48 Hours: The Final Hours of Amie Harwick airs Sunday on CBS and will be streaming on Paramount+.
