Woman Hospitalized After Sidewalk Grate Collapses Beneath Her

A D.C. woman is recovering in the hospital with serious injuries after the sidewalk grate she was walking across collapsed beneath her.

According to WUSA9, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on March 23. First responders answered the call for a “below-grade rescue” and found the woman had fallen at least 10-feet.

Firefighters revealed to the media that while the woman suffered serious injuries, she is suspected to be okay. The identity or age of the woman who fell has not been released.

DC Fire and EMS shared photos of the rescue on Twitter. According to WUSA9, the rescue took about 30 minutes.

First responders used a pulley system and a rescue basket to lift her out of the air well. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the grate to collapse. While these incidences are rare, it’s not the first time something like this has happened. Back in 2020, lawmakers in North Carolina called “for new legislation after the WCNC Charlotte Defenders team found a lack of safety regulations where many people walk in Uptown.”

It’s unclear if DC lawmakers will follow a similar pattern following this incident.

The tweet made by DC Fire and EMS reported that the incident occurred on the 800 block of 4th St. SW. It is also unclear who called the incident into 911.
