Ryan Reynolds Doesn’t Want His Children to Be Kid Actors; Would Rather Them Wait Until They’re Older

On November 17th, Ryan Reynolds received the American Cinematheque Award – which is given to ‘an extraordinary artist in the entertainment industry who is fully engaged in his or her work and is committed to making a significant contribution to the art of the motion pictures.’ He’s the 36th recipient of the award.

He spoke with PEOPLE at the ceremony and while he expressed his gratitude for the career has had so far – and the family he has at home – it was what he said about his children that caught most people’s attention. His goal is to keep his children as far away from Hollywood for as long as humanly possible.

“Putting a kid in a business like this, it’s generally not about the kid. It’s usually about the parents,” said Reynolds before adding that they can do “whatever the hell they want” when they’re older. “Our job is to foster as much interest in as many different things as possible at this point,” the 46-year-old continued.

Ryan Reynolds joins a long list of successful actors to win the American Cinematheque Award. The first-ever recipient was Eddie Murphy in 1986 – he was just 25 years old at the time, the youngest to win the award. Last year, it was 37-year-old Scarlett Johansson who won the award. Now, it’s Reynolds’ turn.

Other notable winners of the award are Spike Lee, Bradley Cooper, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Samuel L. Jackson, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Al Pacino, Steve Martin, Denzel Washington, Nicolas Cage, and Robin Williams

The ceremony featured a wide range of celebrity guests and tribute speeches from some of his closest colleagues and friends – such as Will Ferrel, Nathan Fillion, Mary Steenburgen, Octavia Spencer, Rob McElhenney, Sean Levy, and Blake Lively. It was a touching, memorable, and funny night indeed.

Not only that, but he received video tributes from Jeff Bridges, Salma Hayek, Hugh Jackman, Helen Mirren, Sean Levy and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – it should be noted that Ryan Reynolds was the first Canadian to receive the award. Reynolds was born in Vancouver, Canada.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Expecting Fourth Child

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are relationship goals everywhere they go and in everything they do. They’re not only perfect for each other, but they’re in the midst of raising a beautiful family with lots of potentials – though any potential in front of the camera will have to wait, according to Reynolds.

The couple currently shares three daughters – James, 7, Inez, 6, and Betty, 3 – but they’ll be adding to their family very soon. They announced their fourth pregnancy in September at the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women’s Summit. Lively stunningly showed off her baby bump in a mini dress as only she could.

In November, Reynolds opened up about the upcoming baby and confirmed that he’s hoping for a girl. “I know girls, so I’m kind of hoping that,” he said, adding that the couple will wait to learn the sex of the child until birth – much like they did with their previous three children. Can they make it 4 for 4 with daughters?

As for the award he won, he used his typical comedy to lighten up his speech. “I’ve never really taken myself too seriously and it creates a pretty confounding paradox when I’m celebrated by a very serious Awards Show with prestigious company like this,” he said, adding that the moment is ‘unspeakable’ for him.
