Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson is opening up about how she, her ex brother-in-law King Charles, and Princess Catherine are all supporting each other as they each battle cancer.
While talking with Hello! Sarah, Duchess of York, said it’s been all about the “family unity” they’ve shown during this time.
“I think the key is that you don’t have to be in anyone’s face – the odd note, the odd: ‘Hello, we’re all here,'” she explained to Hello!. “I was so impressed that the King became patron of Cancer Research UK; it’s such an amazing move.”
Sarah also praised Princess Catherine for her bravery while opening up about her diagnosis to the world in the video she shared on Instagram in March.
“And I think the Princess of Wales was so brave with that video [in which Kate made her diagnosis public]. I think family unity is key. I love that the royal family are all supporting each other and carry on.”
And that includes Sarah’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, as well. “I have the most exceptional family and an extraordinarily great team,” she added. “I have an enormous ability to turn to joy.”
As for how she’s doing in her own battle, Sarah says things have been trending in a positive direction, though she isn’t quite out of the woods yet.
The Duchess of York first announced she was diagnosed with skin cancer in January after battling breast cancer in 2023.
“Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma,” the statement read. The spokesperson continued, revealing that Fergie was diagnosed with melanoma while she was undergoing reconstruction surgery while battling breast cancer.
Fergie had several moles removed with at least one of them testing as cancerous. “The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was,” the statement continued.
In her interview with Hello! Sarah admitted that the duel diagnoses forced her to really look at how she was living her life.
“I think it woke me up,” she said. “It gave me a swift kick in the butt and told me: ‘Right, are you going to start living now, at 64, or are you going to keep on not quite living?'”
