Bad Gal Riri — or Rihanna, as we tend to call her — just did a good thing. A very good thing.
The musician and makeup mogul donated $2.1 million to domestic violence victims through her Clara Lionel Foundation.
The donation is part of a partnership with tech giant Jack Dorsey, the CEO of both Twitter and Square, who is also donating $2.1 million to the cause. Both donations will go to the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles and is expressly for victims of domestic violence affected by the “stay at home” order currently in place for residents of Los Angeles.
This is not the first major donation Rihanna has made in response to the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak that has reached nearly every corner of the globe. In March, Rihanna’s foundation made an incredible $5 million donation spread out to many charities actively fighting the havoc caused by the outbreak.
Rihanna also donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the city of New York, for which she received a direct “thank you” from governor Andrew Cuomo.

Her foundation also teamed up with Jay Z‘s Shawn Carter Foundation to offer $2 million in grants “to support COVID-19 response efforts to support undocumented workers, the children of frontline health workers and first responders, and incarcerated, elderly, and homeless populations in New York City and Los Angeles,” according to Vulture.
As many people have adopted the “we’re all in this together” mantra during this difficult time, others are quick to point out that this is not really apt for everyone, especially victims of domestic violence who are now, essentially, trapped at home with their abusers.
Lady Gaga, who is currently raising money from corporations that will be donated to various organizations combatting the outbreak ahead of a televised concert special, spoke to this matter earlier this week.
“This messaging of, ‘we’re all in this together,'” Gaga began, “While I think the sentiment is nice… I also think that the fight that I’m in, or the fight that you’re in, it’s very different than the fight of a woman that is in, perhaps, an abusive relationship and has a child and lost her job and can’t feed her kid and can’t feed herself and also can’t get the help that she needs because she’s in a violent situation.”
She continued, “There’s things that are going on in the underbelly, not only of this country but in countries all over the world… I’ve really been focusing my energy on figuring out how I can help… We all want this to end, but our being in this all together… that’s a tricky statement. Because what that woman is in, I want to honor that that woman’s not in the same fight that I’m in, and I want to help her fight that fight.”
We love to see celebrities and people with resources putting their money where their mouths are. It’s so important to remember the most vulnerable people in our society and to do what we can to help and protect them. Brava, Rihanna, and everyone else doing the good work right now.
