A mom writes in asking for advice about managing her two-year-old daughter’s nightmares. She says that, since birth, her daughter has woken up between 1 and 4 a.m., often screaming. Her daughter’s doctor approved the use of melatonin and says it is likely due to nightmares, but this mom is wondering if there is anything she can do.

“My daughter wakes up with nightmares: Thoughts?
Hey, this is child-related. My daughter since birth will wake up at 1-4 in the morning. She’s now 2.5-years-old. We’ve tried melatonin (cleared by her doc). He says it’s just nightmares. She’ll wake up screaming… Anything I can do?”

“Just an FYI.. melatonin actually makes my nightmares worse. This isn’t uncommon. I hope your little one finds some peace.”
“Melatonin causes nightmares & even night terrors. My daughter has had nightmares since she was super young & she’s almost 8 now. We have even taken her to a neurologist just to make completely sure it wasn’t medical. But I have had nightmares since I was little also. It happens.”
“Could be night terrors but melatonin gives me crazy dreams sometimes scary.”
“My son did it at that age too. It dissipated on its own over time. Hang in there and be patient, Mama.”
“I would see if anything in her food diet might be triggering this; you would be surprised at what you read.”
“My daughter has night terrors. She’s had them since she was 2. She’s 11 now. We just wake her up and tell her to go back to sleep. It sucks but it’s like normal now.”
“Night terrors are different than nightmares. Research both and see which fits her best.”
“White noise, night light.”
“Shot in the dark here, but maybe get her tonsils checked. Can cause sleep apnea and other sleep disturbances.”
“Try a weighted blanket… My doctor told me melatonin makes nightmares worse.”
“Try getting a soft nightlight. She might be waking in pitch black and be frightened. Another thing I used for my kids who were the same was an aroma diffuser with some lavender essential oils. Leaves a calming relaxing scent. My diffuser has a nightlight on it so maybe look into them.”
