Twenty days after singer Grimes and Tesla CEO Elon Musk welcomed their baby son into the world, the mom and dad had to change the spelling of his unique name. Shortly after announcing his birth, the couple also revealed the name they choose for him.
According to Elon, their son’s full name is X Æ A-12 Musk. However, as Grimes pointed out on Instagram, the little boy will go by “X” for short.

Now, as Page Six reports, because of California state law, the parents had to change the spelling of X’s name in order to record X Æ A-12 Musk has is legal moniker. Nonetheless, the changes they made still may not be enough.
Instead of X Æ A-12 Musk, it is now spelled X Æ A-Xii, according to Grimes.
While responding to comments on Instagram, the mom revealed that although her son “has many names,” their son’s name wasn’t allowed to have numbers in it, so they changed the 12 to a roman numeral 12. Which, as Grimes shared, “looks better [to be honest],” before confirming that one dash is allowed.
The new mom also revealed that Go Won from K-pop group LOONA, who she once collaborated with, will be the godmother of X. On Twitter, the singer, who has yet to share a photo of herself with her new son, revealed the meaning behind X’s full name.

“X, the unknown variable. Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) •A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent + (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat).”
As Page Six reports, it was originally believed California laws would only approve a name that only uses the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language. However, it seems as though X is in the clear.
