Danielle Brooks opened up about her emergency c-section on a recent episode of Katie Lowes’ Katie’s Crib podcast. The mama had planned to deliver her 1-month-old daughter, Freeya Carel, vaginally without an epidural, but things went quite differently.
The former Orange Is the New Black star instead experienced an unexpected and frightening emergency cesarean.

“I ended up having to have an emergency [caesarean] section because Freeya had meconium in her system, which meconium is basically when the baby poops inside their amniotic sac,” said Brooks. “So she was in distress and, therefore, we both could be in distress, and so we just had to make it happen.”
Danielle labored for nine hours before being rushed into the operating room. “It was [scary]. It was an episode of ER, for sure,” she shared.
“I immediately started just praying and singing a gospel song,” added the mama. Thankfully, Danielle’s doula advocated for her at every turn and helped her to accept that a c-section was the safest option.
Even though things didn’t go as planned for the Master of None star, we’re happy to hear that things turned out well and baby Freeya is thriving!
