A single mom who wants another baby writes in looking for help with information regarding price, insurance, etc. on getting a sperm donor.
A Community Member asks:
“I’m a 30-year-old mother to a three-year-old little girl, a single mom, and I love it that way. I’m very independent and not getting any younger. I want to have another baby, so my daughter has a sibling, but I won’t want to wait until she’s older. I want them to be close in age, so I’m thinking about going to a facility, and I guess you can say get a sperm donor, but I’m not sure how to go about it. I want to know about pricing and does insurance cover any of it? Do I go to my OB-GYN for it or to an actual facility? If anyone knows anything will help thanks!“

Advice Summary
Read some comments and advice from the community below:
“There is a fertility clinic close to where I live. I didn’t need a referral from my doctor or anything to see them. A fertility clinic is your best resource. You can always contact your insurance carrier to see what they cover for that. Good luck mama!“
“I did it with IVF Australia as they already have a donor registry. It’s roughly 3000 for IUI insemination. 11000 for IVF. I had my son through IVF. Ask your GP for a referral and then make an appointment. I recommend Dr. Louise Faye.“
“Is there a friend you trust to just get you pregnant? It would be cheaper.”
“Call your insurance and see if it requires you to have a referral. If not then google around you. You can use donor sperm with IUIs that is not near the cost of IVF if the specialist thinks it would be a good fit. Best of luck!“
“I had my first son at 22. I didn’t want any more. Things happened and fell pregnant at 31. I vowed I wouldn’t be having any more after he was born. But during that pregnancy, I met my now fiance and we are expecting a baby in June. You’re not too old. Things can happen.. 10 year age gap between my 2 son’s is great. Don’t speak too badly of big gaps. It’s actually really great.. Second and third will be 19 months apart which will also be great.“
“I did it. Single mom here and am pregnant with my sperm donor baby. I went to a fertility clinic and since I don’t have any issues except a man, I chose to do IUI, so much cheaper than IVF! My total cost was around $1300 and I got pregnant the first try.“
“You could consider adoption or fostering if you are financially able to. That way you don’t have to go through the hassle of finding a sperm donor or a random hook up and dealing with the court later on because they want to be in their child’s life.“
Final Thoughts
Being a single mother has its challenges, I am sure. I think many women can understand why you would want to give a sibling to your child. Finding a sperm donor and going through the whole has its own challenges. It seemed that the community had some really positive feedback. My only advice is to do your research, and talk with others who have done it. Get the pros and cons.
