Four months ago, on June 7, Alex Murdaugh’s wife and one of his two sons were shot at their home. At the time of their death, Murdaugh, a prominent South Carolina lawyer, wasn’t home.
He reported their murders to police when he allegedly found their bodies after returning home around 10 p.m. that night. According to reports, Alex Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, had met with a divorce lawyer around the time of her death.

As a source told the Daily News, Maggie didn’t often “pay close attention to the family money or where it came from. But now she was starting to look into it.” Coworkers also claimed that there was a noticeable distance between Alex and Maggie.
Maggie would often meet her husband for lunch at his office. However, in the days leading up to her death, those lunch meetings became fewer and fewer.
According to investigators, the guns that killed Maggie and Paul were different. The motive for their murders remains unclear.
Then, three months after Maggie and Paul’s deaths, Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head in September. His injuries were minor and he survived.
However, investigators later discovered that the shooting was staged. Alex had hired someone to shoot him in order to collect his $10 million life insurance policy.
“The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life,” Murdaugh said in a statement. “I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret. I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders.”
Since then, Alex Murdaugh has been charged with conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and filing a false police report. Now, it is being reported that Murdaugh reportedly swindled his housekeeper’s money as well.
According to The New York Times, Murdaugh was arrest on October 14 while receiving treatment at a drug detox facility in Florida. He was additionally charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
He is now spending time in an Orlando jail. As The Times reports, the charges are the result of a “settlement that Alex and his insurers reached with his housekeeper’s sons.” Gloria Satterfield died in 2018 after falling on the front steps of the Murdaugh’s South Carolina home. Gloria suffered a brain hemorrhage as a result of the fall, she died several weeks later at the hospital.
It was later revealed in a new lawsuit that Alex didn’t tell Gloria’s sons that the lawyer he referred them to was a close friend and former college roommate. In the end, the lawyer negotiated a $4.3 million settlement with Alex.
However, Alex Murdaugh reportedly told the lawyer to issue the settlement to him personally so that he could set up a fund for the adult sons. In the end, more than $3 million was found in Alex’s personal bank account and the two sons were never told a settlement had been reached.
Gloria’s sons, Tony Satterfield and Brian Harriott said they never received any of the $2.8 million they should have received after legal fees. Now, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has opened an investigation into the circumstances of Gloria’s death as no autopsy has ever been conducted and her death was ultimately attributed as natural causes.
