Just seven months after welcoming their first child into the world, comedian and actress Amy Schumer has opened up about her struggle to have baby number two, as well as her IVF journey.
Schumer and her husband Chris Fischer became parents for the first time on May 5 following the birth of their son, Gene Attell.
In an episode of Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy podcast, Schumer revealed that while giving birth to Gene, she endured a very scary three-hour c-section. “I was throwing up through the whole first hour of my C-section. It’s supposed to take about an hour and a half or something but mine took over three hours because of my endometriosis.”

During her pregnancy, Schumer also struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, that left her ill throughout the entire nine months.

Thankfully, Gene was born a healthy baby boy, and Schumer’s nausea went away immediately after the c-section was over. Now, despite the brutal pregnancy and delivery she endured, Schumer wants to give Gene a younger sibling. (Warning: The image below may be emotionally triggering for some who have gone through IVF.)
However, as the comedian’s latest Instagram post reveals, the journey toward baby number two has been a difficult one. She wrote:
“I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional. If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”
Thousands of people reached out to let Schumer know they are sending her positive thoughts, and many shared their struggles as well. One commenter wrote, “My heart goes out to you (and everyone on the IVF journey). I went on that journey and had pure heartbreak and pure joy.”
Another mom added, “I did IUI with the IVF drugs for 10 months. Injectables and trigger shots and all. It is INTENSE!! This is my TTC page and I follow SO many wonderful helpful women that are going through IVF. All I can say is it’s super rough, until you get your positive outcome. Good luck with it all and please feel free to PM me or any of the other amazing women I follow. We all support each other in this crazy wild ride.”
And one person shared, “IVF gave me the most wonderful gift, my son. But it was also the most traumatic experience I had to live cause it is so invasive. It completely change my relationship with my body. Women are fierce. Trust yourself in that process. Everything you are going through is normal. There is not a lot of literature on the emotional part of the process, unfortunately. There is so much love in this act. You are already the mama of the next child to come.”
Shortly after being flooded with encouraging words and messages, Schumer took to her Instagram story to thank everyone for their kindness. She also shared a message to other women going through a similar journey, “We are not alone.”
Earlier this week, Schumer also paid tribute to their nanny, the woman who cares for Gene when Amy and Chris are working.
Schumer took to Instagram to share how much she loves the woman who cares for Gene when she can’t. “This is our nanny who makes it possible for me to work and know that our baby is happy and healthy. I love her very much and we also both want to have nice skin.”
People also praised Schumer for giving her nanny the praise she deserves.
