I was told my baby had fluid in the back of her neck: Advice?

Thank you. I went to the doctors yesterday, and I was told my baby has liquid in the back of her neck and that I have to go see a maternal-fetal medicine. Has anybody gone through this? I can’t stop thinking about it. I don’t have my appointment until the 23rd.

Hi there!
In response to your post, my friend was told the same thing with her pregnancy, the doctor boldly told her he suggested an abortion. She declined, as she was prepared to care for the baby regardless. Her daughter is 23 and 100% healthy. No down syndrome whatsoever. No health concerns. Perfectly healthy young woman. Get a second and third opinion. Stay strong.

I had to get trisomy 18 testing done. The ultrasound showed risk factors for it and I had to go to a bigger hospital for tests. They only needed a blood sample for the test and everything ended up being normal. It was scary but there is a chance that the initial test was a false positive and the baby is fine. Apparently it happens alot

My baby had hydrops? I had to go to a specialist for 2nd opinion and they wanted to run test and find out why but I didnt let them bc they told me it would go into cardiac arrest by time I was 20 weeks and unfortunately it did around about 22 weeks…

Not in his neck, but my doctor believed he had extra fluid in his manhood, she sent us to the specialist they did an ultrasound to look for it, they explained to me he’s have to have a small surgery if he had it but they’d call me with results. He ended not having it and was completely fine. Prayers and good vibes your way Momma! Try not to worry too much til you have all your answers.

They may do bloods or if indicated offer an amniocentesis…they may want to check for a chromosome abnormality.

I could be wrong but isn’t that a sign that the baby could have down syndrome

Sorry your going through this. It could mean many things, including a variety of syndromes to organ problems. How far along are you? Did they say how much fluid exactly? I have been to fetal medicine before at 14 weeks gestation, with 9.24mm of fluid on The neck and our baby girl had turners syndrome. I opted to have a needle put through my stomach into the baby’s fluid which gives you 100% answer of what is going on. Good luck on your journey.

I know how hard it is to wait because I was told at my last visit that they couldn’t see a nasal bridge (which can be a soft indicator of Down Syndrome). But in my expecting moms Facebook group, I’ve heard many stories of moms who were told the same as you and their babies came perfectly healthy and live totally normal lives!

Bottom line, do your absolute best to keep a positive mind and to relax until your appointment. I know how hard that is when they can see issues, but honestly that’s all you can do until then. I’m hoping the best for you and your sweet baby!:heart:

When I was pregnant with my youngest they told me his spinal column looked slightly thicker than it should be so they sent us to get an echocardiogram in Springfield but when we went everything was fine n he’s now a perfectly normal and healthy 3 year old. Sometimes the pictures just aren’t quite clear or things can change but they will want to give u the options to check it as a precaution.

I would go…play it safe

Go and do the test the doc send
you and put it in god hands . It will be ok many blessing to the family.

I had the same issue with my son, they took us to one side after our scan, told us there was too much fluid on back of his neck which could be indicator of some problems such as heart issues or genetic issues. They advised me to have further tests and I was given the option of amniocentesis or CVS, I opted for the CVS as that meant having the test done earlier as I didn’t want to wait until 16th week of pregnancy to find out. The test was ok and went smoothly. I also had to go to a specialist hospital for them to do a scan on baby’s heart. I got all results back from the tests they did and was told nothing of concern had been detected. I went on to have a healthy baby boy, who is now 5 years old. So sometimes they can detect these things and there is nothing to worry about, but it is definitely worth gaining as much advice and so whatever tests they advise. Good luck.
