My 4-month-old has had a cough for weeks now: Advice?

I need significant help here. My four-month-old has had a cough for about three weeks now. He has been to his pediatrician, the ER, even a children’s hospital, and they keep saying he’s fine. It seems this cough is getting worse and worse. A few minutes ago, I walked into the next room over. Heard him cough a few times…then he just kept coughing and coughing. It’s really hacky and its cough after cough. He had tears coming out of his eyes, and his eyelids looked purplish. I’m so upset. I don’t know what to do. Anyone else ever has a child that went through this!? I’m his mother.I know something is wrong, but no one will listen!!!

I went through this with my baby and my dr informed me that the cold symptoms could last for up to six weeks.

Have they seen him cough? The dr and ER and hospital staff?
If not, I would video often and show them.

ask for a second opinion, my son was a year old and diagnosed with “Measles” without any testing… I had 4 doctors examine him and he had an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin… not the same thing but just sharing my story :slightly_smiling_face:

Just keep seeing other doctors ask if they can do a X-ray at least to check his lungs

Take him back to the hospital and invoke Ryan’s Rule, they can’t dismiss you til they’ve tested him for everything

Video tape or record it so they can hear how bad it is, then when you take him in show the doctor.

Could be an irritant of some type too. My son coughs & becomes instantly congested every time he’s near a cigarette smoker. Js. It’s something to consider as well as tis the season for upper respiratory gunk

Kids probably got crup it’ll go away. Bring them him in a steam filled bathroom for alil bit let it clear his lungs out

My poor baby has had like 5 colds in 9months of life. The cough can linger for a long time! At 4 months old you can use baby vicks on chest and back and keep a cool mist humidifier going. Use baby nasal spray and booger sucker as often as needed.

Something in the home?

Be persistent. If it’s getting worse, take him back to the Dr. Keep taking him to the Dr, a different Dr, the ER, etc, until you get some help or he gets better. Good luck Mama!

Colds can linger for a long time, especially during the winter months. Unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot you can do. Try closing the bathroom door and turning the shower on as hot as it will go and just sit in the steamy bathroom with babe. My son has had a lingering cough for several months but he is fine otherwise. You can elevate babys bed a little bit, but some baby vicks on the bottom of the feet, get some nasal spray for babys.

Did they test for RSV and Flu? Chest X-ray? Unfortunately most coughs are viral and they just have to fight it off. There’s not a whole lot to do as most remedies don’t work well.

Hope he gets to feeling better

Asthma. My son has cold whether asthma and it makes him cough after cough. Having an inhaler helps a lot. Also sounds a lot like bronchitis. You should take him prob to a different pediatrician. I also use Vick’s vapor rub to help break up the stuff in his chest. Honey helps with coughs but his sounds more bronchial and asthma related. Good luck :four_leaf_clover: Hope he feels better.

My son had a really bad cough and turned out to be croup. Took a nebulizer to start getting better

Try humidifier, baby Vicks on chest and feet, & if he’s congested or having a lot of snot or mucus ask the Dr about Claritin. My baby had a cold and bad cough and congestion and the Dr prescribed Claritin for her and it helped a lot daily. I also gave her the cold tablets but she was 6 months
