You might know Ashley Rosenbaum from the 2011 season of The Bachelorette. On the show, she married JP Rosenbaum and the couple now has two kids. Ashley has many fans including over 300,000 Instagram followers. As with any online presence, Ashley gets her fair share of unsolicited advice and even mom-shaming online.

However, one comment changed her child’s life. In 2017, Ashley and JP welcomed their baby, Essex, into the family. Ashley posted a bunch of photos of her beloved baby and one comment on a photo gave her pause. “Somebody wrote me a message saying, ‘Hey, get her checked out’ because she was always twisted, she had torticollis,” Ashley told People. After an examination, it turned out Essex did have torticollis and that the comment was right.
Ashley and JP Rosenbaum have been married since 2012 after they met on The Bachelorette. They’re now parents to two children, son Fordham, 4, and daughter Essex, 2.
Both Ashley and JP have a bunch of followers on Instagram and they enjoy sharing photos of the family with their 500,000 fans.
Considering that the couple met on television, they’re no strangers to public scrutiny. Getting commentary from strangers is in the job description.
Unfortunately, many of the comments Ashley receives are negative, mom-shaming, trash. They usually offer nothing except criticism. The internet can be a savage place!
But, not all comments are bad! One comment, in fact, helped diagnose her daughter’s disorder. It all started after Essex was born two years before.
“Our daughter, when she was born, I was posting pictures of her and somebody wrote me a message saying, ‘Hey, get her checked out’ because she was always twisted, she had torticollis,” Ashley told People.
Ashley elaborated, “Someone said, ‘Get it checked out because my son had the same thing.’”
Okay… We all take those Insta comments with a grain of salt, right?
But, Ashley couldn’t get the comment out of her head.
“I read [the comment] and was like, ‘Oh whatever,’ but then I was like, ‘Oh my God, this person is right,’” she said.
“I got her checked out and she had it. We got the baby helmet and everything!” Ashley explained.
According to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, torticollis is a “twisting of the neck that causes the head to rotate and tilt at an odd angle.” The symptoms include a limited range of head motion, headache, or neck pain.
No one knows what causes torticollis, but some doctors speculate that it has to do with the baby’s position in the uterus. Like Essex, most people with the condition are born with it.
Luckily for the Rosenbaum family, torticollis is easy to treat if it’s caught early enough. Thank goodness for that person who commented on Instagram!
Look at these cute kids! Ashley told US Weekly, that they’re not having any more children. “[We have] a boy and girl, healthy and happy, we’re done! It’s perfect,” she said.
Essex doesn’t have to wear the helmet anymore! We’re so happy that something good came from social media. We’re also pleased that this family is thriving.
