Blake Shelton admits becoming a step father has changed him.
After marrying wife Gwen Stefani, Shelton became a step father to her three sons. Now it’s been 10 years since they first met and Shelton is reflecting.
Shelton, who doesn’t have biological children of his own, admitted in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that becoming a step father changed him “in every possible way.”
And if he had the chance to do it all over again, he absolutely would.
“If I could have a repeat of these past 10 years, [that] would be perfect. Next month, we’ve got an 18-year-old, which it blows my mind that already happened. And in a couple of years, we’ll have another 18-year-old. And that’s…it’s gonna be a lot more alone time,” Shelton shared, which he admits he’s “not mad about that either.”
But thankfully, their youngest, who is only 10 will still be in the house for a while longer. “But we still have Apollo, so we have another almost 10 years before we can kick him out, so it should be a lot of fun.”
The singer admits he’s learned a lot to, saying by taking a step back, he’s learned it’s not about him anymore, it’s only about the kids.
“I learned quickly, not because anything happened, but just, you know, reading the room, you’ve really got [to think], ‘I have to take a step back,'” Shelton explained. “When people say it’s not about you anymore when you have a kid… I think, if you’re doing it right, it’s not about you anymore. That’s true.”
And to think, Shelton and Stefani’s connection wasn’t immediate. As he told ET, “You would see her out at the red chairs if there was a production meeting or whatever and I feel like I got to know Pharrell [Williams] more that year than I did Gwen.”
“It wasn’t until the season she came back, the next one, that the pieces were falling together,” Shelton explained.
In years past, since becoming partners, Stefani has celebrated Shelton as a dad by wishing him a “Happy Father’s Day” on social media.
Back in 2020, Shelton told The Today Show, “that [becoming a step father] is a scary moment for me because it’s one thing for me to be with the kids all the time and be their buddy. But then you do have to consider after a while, that they’re starting to listen to things that you say, and there’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that, which is new to me.”
But four years later, it looks like he is doing just fine.
