Officials Find Remnants of a Campsite in Closed Florida Reserve as They Search for Brian Laundrie

UPDATE: As of Oct. 7, authorities are refuting claims that a campsite was ever found. The conflicting reporting follows the news that Chris Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s father, is assisting with the search in the Carlton Reserve.

New potential evidence has been discovered in the Carlton Reserve in Florida where the ongoing search for Brian Laundrie is underway. Officials found what appeared to be a recently used campsite despite the closure of the reserve to the public, a source told CNN.

Police closed the reserve and mounted a search effort last month after the Laundrie’s disappearance. He was reported missing on September 17, just days after his fiancée Gabby Petito was reported missing after Laundire returned from a road trip the couple had been on.

As Mamas Uncut reported, Laundrie’s father, Chris Laundrie, had been asked to assist authorities on the search by showing them the trails that his son had been known to use.

“Chris was asked to point out any favorite trails or spots that Brian may have used in the preserve. Although Chris and Roberta Laundrie provided this information verbally 3 weeks ago it is now thought that on-site assistance may be better,” family attorney, Steven Bertolino told CNN.

The North Port Police Department confirmed that a notice was placed on an abandoned vehicle belonging to the Laundrie family not far from the Carlton Reserve on September 14.

Laundrie’s family told authorities on September 17 that they had not seen Brian for days but believed that he was heading to the reserve.

The search for Laundrie intensified following September 11 when Petito was reported missing by her family. The couple had been on a cross-country road trip over the summer that concluded with Laundrie returning home to Florida. Shortly after, Petito’s remains were discovered in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

The FBI confirmed that a coroner’s report indicated that Petito’s cause of death was homicide. Laundrie has not been formally charged with the death of his fiancée but the FBI issued a search warrant for him for the unauthorized use of another person’s debit card and pin. The card was used in the days following Petito’s disappearance.
