Reese Witherspoon Releases New Book for Kids, ‘Busy Betty’ Inspired by Her Childhood and Named for Her Mom

Academy Award Winner and one of our favorite celebrity moms, Reese Witherspoon joined Good Morning America recently to discuss her newest venture, a children’s book called “Busy Betty.” The book is somewhat personal to her as it is inspired by her own childhood and the main character, Betty is named after the star’s mother.

In the interview with GMA, she shared that she penned “Busy Betty” to encourage kids and young people to start businesses as well as how to manage money. That sounds like a worthwhile read and now we are wondering where was this book when we were kids!?

“I think part of what’s really fun about making this book is I wanted to come up with businesses that kids could actually do, so we have a business inside of this book that’s about a dog washing service that kids could do in their neighborhoods,” The Morning Show actor told the GMA audience.

The pandemic is partly to blame for “Busy Betty.” Witherspoon explained that all the free time she had caused her to remember how well, “busy” she was as a child.

“I was so bored and I was cleaning out old photos and I found all these pictures of me as a little girl and all the little businesses I had started and I thought… ‘what if I made a children’s book teaching young people about early business concepts,'” she explained to GMA.

It was not just her own gumption that made her such a busybody, the Legally Blonde star admitted. Her mother “was the original busy person who I got all my busy-ness from,” she said.

“My mother was a nurse for 40 years and a teacher at the state university and she just was always busy always had a job and educating and helping people was part of our lives.”

Witherspoon also described the various businesses she started as a child. “I had lemonade stands, of course, I had you know… bake sales, garage sales but I would have circuses, magic shows…” she told the audience.

“This summer we bought a snow-cone machine and it was so fun to teach them concepts of business like: How much money do you have to start with? What should you charge for each thing, you know… What are you going to do with the profits? … Just early concepts to talk about what does it mean to be a business owner.”
