During an episode of the TODAY show in 2020, Carson Daly gave his Studio 1A panelists an update on his sleeping arrangements with his wife, Siri Daly – for context, he had previously revealed that he and his wife were in the midst of a ‘sleep divorce,’ which is when a couple no longer sleeps in the same bed.
“I was served my sleep-divorce papers a few years ago,” he explained to the panel on the TODAY show. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to us. We both, admittedly, slept better apart.” And while the term ‘sleep divorce’ makes it sound like they’re in a rough place, it’s not like that – they still love each other.
And in a new interview with People, Daly says it’s still working for them. “The object is to stay together. That’s what we’d like to do. And so reverse engineering that, it’s like — by any means necessary, for the two of us, [we want to] still be in a relationship when we’re dying.”
Although it’s not every night of the week, it is several nights that the couple retires to separate bedroom. Daly told People that doing this takes the “tension” out of it and it “works” for them. “It’s been good for us. … I highly recommend it.”
In fact, the reason they decided to go through a sleep divorce was because they were having a hard time getting a good night’s rest. Understanding how important sleep is to your day-to-day health, they felt it was necessary to do something about it. Sure enough, it has benefited them in the greatest of ways!
It wasn’t the first time Carson Daly has mentioned the sleep divorce with his wife. He first opened up about it in September 2019 while on the TODAY show and has talked about it numerous times since then – including in an interview with PEOPLE magazine and during a conversation with Dr. Mehmet Oz.
“She’s pregnant so she has some rough nights. I have sleep apnea so I just started on this CPAP. It’s a mask that makes all sorts of noise. … We don’t want to sleep apart, but we have now, and I think secretly we’re both like, ‘This is kinda cool’ because you get command of the whole room,” he said in Sept. 2019.
While talking to Dr. Oz, he joked that the ‘sleep divorce’ was due to ‘irreconcilable sleeping’ and urged other married couples to invest more in their sleep routines and patterns. Dr. Oz shared that sentiment and claimed ‘if you’re not taking care of your sleep, you’re hurting your marriage’ – so don’t feel ashamed!
“We’re both pretty good-sized humans, and it just wasn’t really working when she was in her third trimester, and I also have sleep apnea, which is very sexy for the ladies out there, I’m sure,” he said to PEOPLE magazine – joking that he and his wife were ‘like a commercial’ kicking each other in their sleep.
Carson Daly Discovered a New Sleeping Method – the 2-Duvet-System
While talking about it in an episode of TODAY, Carson Daly discussed a new method of sleeping that he recently discovered that allows couples to still sleep in the same bed, but allows them a little more control over their personal space. It’s a Scandinavian method that’s often referred to as the 2-duvet-system.
“You have your own comforters or duvets,” Carson said of the system – which is basically just sleeping in the same bed, but using different blankets. It won’t solve everything, but it helps. “Studies have actually found that sleeping with the same blanket can result in more interrupted sleep, as much as 30%.”
“This sounds like (it’s) really worth trying, because you have independence,” he continued. While the rest of his panel wasn’t exactly on-board with the Scandinavian trend, millions of couples around the world can find use of it – especially if they’re having a hard time getting a good night’s rest, which is important.
