On April 29, convicted felon Casey White escaped from an Alabama prison. Authorities believe he escaped with the help of one of the prison guards who cared for him during his time in prison, Vicky White. Now he’s being charged with her murder.

As previous reports revealed, it is believed Casey, 38, and Vicky had a romantic relationship while he was a prisoner. Casey has been charged with one count of felony murder in connection to the death Vicky inflicted on herself.

While Vicky White died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on May 9, authorities claim that although Casey did not pull the trigger he “caused” the death of Vicky White, People reports.

According to CBS News, “Alabama law allows a murder charge if someone, ’causes the death of any person’ while engaging in certain other felonies, such as escape, or if the person “recklessly engages in conduct which creates a grave risk of death to a person.”

CBS News further reports that the indictment reads that “White caused the death of Vicky White, who died from a gunshot to the head,” but does not clarify who pulled the trigger.

Prior to his escape, Casey had been detained since 2020. He was awaiting trial after being charged with two counts of capital murder. Vicky was the assistant director of corrections prior to her death.

As a ploy to escape the prison on detected, White, 56, told her coworkers that she was transporting a prisoner that day “to a mental health evaluation.” It was only later learned that appointment never actually existed.

People reports that just one day before their escape, Vicky filed paperwork to begin her retirement. She also sold her home a month earlier.

During their escape, Casey was captured nearly 500 miles away in Evansville, Indiana. Investigators made their way to a hotel in Evansville following a tip.

Casey and Vicky then led police on a high-speed chase which ended in a crash. Vicky was discovered with “an injury consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Casey surrendered at the scene, while Vicky was transported to a hospital where she later died. According to WHNT, Vicky held up her end of their alleged bargain.

As WHNT reports, Casey and Vicky were believed to have had an agreement that if they were ever caught, Vicky would kill herself and Casey would die in a shootout with police.
