However, the District Attorney’s Office told E! that those accusations showed insufficient evidence and had reached the statute of limitations.

The news site also obtained a statement made by his lawyer following his arrest. “Mr. Masterson is innocent, and we’re confident that he will be exonerated when all the evidence finally comes to light and witnesses have the opportunity to testify,” the statement began.

“Obviously, Mr. Masterson and his wife [actress Bijou Phillips] are in complete shock considering that these nearly 20-year-old allegations are suddenly resulting in charges being filed, but they and their family are comforted knowing that ultimately the truth will come out. The people who know Mr. Masterson know his character and know the allegations to be false.”

The lawsuits were first filed in 2019. They named Masterson, the Church of Scientology—which Masterson belongs too—and the church’s leader, David Miscavige, claiming that they were all complicit in “carrying out a conspiracy to cover up the star’s alleged sexual misconduct and harassment.”

The women also claimed that the church “systemically stalked, harassed, invaded their and their family’s privacy, and intentionally caused them emotional distress to silence and intimidate them.”

Former Scientologist, actress Leah Remini, who has been speaking out against her former church for years now, has also responded to Masterson’s arrest and subsequent charges. “Finally, victims are being heard when it comes to Scientology! Praise the Lord! This is just the beginning Scientology, your days of getting away with it is coming to an end!”

Since her husband’s arrested, Phillips has since deleted her social media accounts. The actor, who is also a dad to a little girl, is still active on social media.
