David Foster Posts Incredible Video of 2-Year-Old Son, Rennie, Playing the Drums

David Foster and Katharine McPhee are proud parents as their 2-year-old son, Rennie, continues to show improvement on his miniature drum set. While most children his age are just starting to scribble and build blocks, Rennie is starting to rock out and build melodies – a talent his parents noticed very early on.

“PROGRESS!! 2yrs 3mon,” Foster wrote in an Instagram video that shows just how talented Rennie is on a drum set. Wearing a pair of headphone, red pajamas, and no socks, Rennie gets a steady beat going on the snare, bass, and cymbal after hitting the tom drums sporadically – the kid has some true talent!

The 2-year-old is taking after his parents, who have both maintained successful careers in music. David Foster, 73, has been nominated for 47 and won 16 Grammy Awards over the past 50+ years, while Katharine McPhee, 39, was named runner-up on Season 5 of American Idol and now has five albums.

As for Rennie, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen him on a drum set. On August 3, 2022, Foster took to Instagram to share a video of his 17-month-old son drumming on a play mat that mimicked basic drum sounds. Despite his young age, Rennie was accurate with the drum sticks and maintained a steady beat.

On January 1, Foster showed more of his son’s progress at 22 months old. His son upgraded to an actual drum set and picked up quite a beat on the cymbal and snare with his nanny watching in the background. There aren’t many 2-year-olds doing what he’s doing on a drum set – and he’s doing it in his pajamas.

A few weeks later, Foster shared another video of his son on the drum set – this time he was wearing a pair of headphones a black shirt, and a diaper. On February 22, Rennie celebrated his 2nd birthday by finding a new use for chopsticks. Using the toys around him, Rennie created his own little drum set.

“Well, you know I’m trying to hold back a little, I don’t want to get too excited there. But you would think between Kat and I, we probably would have a child that would be musical,” Foster said in an interview with E! News in January. He wasn’t sure if Rennie would follow in their footsteps, but it appears so.

David Foster Could Be Adding to His Family in the Future

The couple met in 2006 when Foster served as McPhee’s guest mentor on Season 5 of American Idol. The two professionals remained close friends over the next decade, but things started turning romantic following McPhee’s 2016 divorce from Nick Cokas and Foster’s 2017 divorce from Yolanda Hadid

It wasn’t until 2018 that the couple went public with their relationship. They announced their pregnancy in late 2020 and gave birth to their first child on February 22, 2021 – a son named Rennie David Foster. And according to an interview in January, the couple have plans of adding to their family in the future.

“I would love to have another baby,” McPhee told Jennifer Hudson during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show in late-January. Rennie is her first child, but Foster – who is 34 years old her senior – is a father to six adult daughters. “We’re not in a crazy rush, but I hope so. I love being a mom, I really love it.”

That same month, Foster explained how he has much more time to enjoy being a father and is much more attentive to his son than he was with his daughters – largely because he was so focused on his career when he had his daughters. While he still works a lot, he admits time is a little more precious now.
