Elliot Page and Emma Portner filed for divorce after three years of marriage. While this comes as unwelcome news, all signs point to their relationship transforming into an excellent friendship.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” the two said in a joint statement released Tuesday. “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
Elliot Page and Emma Portner filed for divorce on Tuesday.
The Whip It star, 33, filed for divorce in a Manhattan court, according to TMZ. The split comes over 3 years after the two announced their surprise wedding just after New Year’s in 2018.
Page initially hinted at his relationship with Portner, 26, by posting pictures with her on social media during the summer of 2017. A teacher at the Broadway Dance Center, Portner is originally from Ottawa, Ontario, according to her bio on the dance school’s website.
Page, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2007 indie smash Juno, came out as a transgender man in a sincere statement only two months ago.
Portner supported him publicly at the time, writing a loving Instagram caption following Page’s statement, where he announced he goes by the pronouns he/they.

“I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much,” Portner wrote alongside Page’s statement.
In the statement, Page first introduced his name before thanking the trans community for motivating him to come out.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” he wrote. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”
Page wrote at the time that he was feeling “overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.”

I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community,” he continued. “Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”
While we are saddened by the news, we are so pleased to see that the couple remains friends and that they clearly still support one another. Coming out is a huge life event and we hope that Page is enjoying the journey and feeling like his most authentic self.
