When it comes to social media, Eva Mendes prefers to keep it about herself and her career. Whether it be her latest clothing line or what she had for lunch that day, one thing you won’t find on her Instagram feed is a photo of her kids or of her longtime partner, Ryan Gosling.
And there is a reason as to why Mendes prefers to keep her personal life as a lover and mom separate. No, it’s not because she’s ashamed of Gosling, or the two young daughters they share, it’s because she needs to have some boundaries as a public person.

Three days ago, Mendes took to Instagram to share an image of one of her favorite paintings. In the caption, she admitted that during these unprecedented times, it feels wrong to post about her normal day to day when the world is anything but normal right now.

“During these times, I’m so confused about what to post so I’m going to post things that move me in hopes that they move you as well,” Mendes wrote. “Since I don’t post my about immediate family, and it feels so wrong to post about work, here you go…One of my favorite pieces of art from one of my favorite artist René Magritte. I’ve always loved this one and it feels especially relevant right now. Sending lots of love out there.”
The next day, she shared a snapshot of a picture one of her daughters drew of her. “This is me. By my kid. It’s pretty accurate. No, I haven’t become a master baker or a good cook during quarantine. I haven’t seen a gym in two months. I haven’t written a novella,” Mendez admitted honestly.
“I’ve just been trying to be a fun mom and not lose my marbles,” she continued, adding, “Reading comments and happy to connect so let me know how you’re feeling.” And in an attempt to connect with her fans, Mendes even responded to a few comments.
One person asked, “Thanks for being real, and I hope you and yours are doing things to make you happy. Looking forward to your post and I hope you all are safe. What was your favorite set to be on? And who was your best scene partner?”
Mendes replied, sweetly saying, “Lost River. It was like camp! And Ryan Gosling but of course!”
Another person then asked, “Why never immediate family?” To which Mendes explained in more detail, writing, “Hi! I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life.”
The mom continued to add that she especially avoids posting pictures of her girls because they aren’t old enough to give her their consent. “And since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent. As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way, To stay private.”
Mendes went on to say in another conversation with another fan that “I don’t mind explaining myself sometimes. I care about people and their questions. So I’m happy to answer honestly.”

And in response to the self-portrait her daughter drew of her, fans very much appreciated Mendes’ candor.
“A beautiful Masterpiece,” one follower wrote. “You are so relatable on here. Always asking what’s up, and sharing parts of your life with us.”
And to that, Mendes wrote saying that the “social” part of social media is the only part she enjoys. She went on to say that she’s “happy that comes across.”
