One week after the slap heard around the world took place, Will Smith was the butt of one of the jokes during the opening dialogue at the GRAMMYs.
On April 3, the award season continued with the GRAMMYs. This year, the show is being hosted by late-night talk show host Trevor Noah.
GRAMMYS Host Makes Not-So-Subtle Dig at Will Smith During Opening Dialogue
And during Noah’s open dialogue, he slid a not-so-subtle dig at Will Smith, but if you weren’t paying close attention you may have missed it. While closing up his statements, Noah admitted that while they were going to have some fun tonight, they were also going to “keep people’s names out of their mouths.”
This joke was directed at Smith’s verbal outburst towards Chris Rock after he slapped him on National Television during the Oscars over a G.I. Jane joke Rock made towards Jada Pinkett Smith. After slapping Rock, Smith yelled at him to “keep his wife’s name out you f*cking mouth.”
Shortly after Noah’s joke, Quest Love presented the first GRAMMY award for Song of the Year. If you recall, Quest Love won an Oscar last week immediately after Smith slapped Rock.

While presenting the GRAMMY, Quest Love joked that he “trusted the audience members would stay at least 500-feet away from him. Last week, Quest Love admitted that he felt like his Oscar moment was taken from him due to Smith’s outburst.
As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Rock has not yet released a full statement about the slap, but Will Smith has since issued two statements. In his first statement, Will apologized directly to Rock.
However, in a stunning update to this story, Will Smith issued a statement saying he has resigned his membership in the Academy of Motion Pictures.
In a statement issued to CNN by his publicist, Smith began by saying, “I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.”
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
As Smith concluded his statement he wrote, “So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”
As it has been widely reported, Jada has suffered from alopecia since 2018. Late last year, she made the decision to shave her head due to hair loss.
It is still believed that Smith and Rock have not discussed the incident privately. Rock is currently on tour in Boston where he briefly addressed the slap at the beginning of his set on Wednesday. He told the audience that he has not yet fully processed the incident and will speak about more at a later date.
