My Mom Posted My Birth Announcement on Social Media Before I Could: Am I Right to Be Upset?

A new mom writes in asking for advice after her mom, the new baby’s grandmother, posted a birth announcement on social media before the new mom could. This mom says she feels disrespected and that she wanted to announce the arrival of her baby in her own way. Any advice for her?

“Would you be upset if your mom posted the birth announcement before you did?

Would you be upset if your mother (the grandmother) posted on social media announcing the birth of your child before you got to announce the delivery in your own way? To me, I feel like it’s extremely disrespectful and selfish. Am I alone in feeling this way?”

Most commenters were very sympathetic towards this mom and said that they would have felt the exact same way. “I would be livid! No excuse for this” one commenter said.

“I would be pissed,” another said. “That is just very inconsiderate.”

Many people urged this new mom to try and be understanding towards her own mother, even though she has every right to feel angry.

“I would have been disappointed, but now as a grandmother, I sort of get it. Better to chalk it up to excitement and let it go.”

Another commenter added, “Did you ask her not to do it? She is a grandma and was excited. I would be upset if I asked for it not to be done and they did it, but how would they know if you didn’t tell them? And I’m sure some peeps are gonna say she should have known but obviously some people don’t know if nothing is said. How about just enjoy your baby and the fact that you have a very excited mother who is so happy for you? There’s more to life than social media. Hell. before you had to wait for it to be announced in the paper. Would you have been mad then too if someone said it before the paper came out?”

In general, people felt that this mom was entitled to her feelings but that she should try and be sympathetic towards her mom, who is also very excited.
