How I Make My Own Candles…Which Also Make Adorable Homemade Mother’s Day Gifts

With Mother’s Day in less than a month, I am going to show you how I make candles at home! I do this simply for fun because I enjoy it, but this is also a fun activity to do with your kids. And in turn, these candles become adorable from the heart, homemade gifts they can give to their moms or grandmothers, aunts, or stepmoms for Mother’s Day!

So here we go! This is how you can make a candle gift for Mother’s Day at home:

First, buy a complete candle making kit from Amazon. This is the one I use:

This kit comes complete with a stainless steel pouring pot, a stirring spoon, wicks, wick tape, soy-based wax, and two wick holders!

Then to give the candle a custom scent, I like to use essential oils. Like these ones:

My favorite candle scent combination is a lot of lemongrass with a dash of sweet orange! It’s light, subtle, but smells oh, so good!

Now you need something to put your wick and wax in. This is the fun part because nearly anything can be turned into a candle! Sometimes, I like to search antique shops for this portion of candle making, but you can also find create things on Amazon as well.

The last candle I made, I used a tea cup, similar to this one:

Now, it is time to melt the wax! To do this, I put a shallow pot of water, filled up a quarter of the way on the stove. I turn the flame to mid-heat and I put my pouring pot that is filled with wax flakes into the hot water. While I occasionally stir the melting wax, I put one of the wick stickers in the center bottom of the tea cup and then stick the wick to the sticker.

Then, I place the wick through the center hole of the wick holder and wait for my wax to completely melt. Once the wax is melted, I then put in my essential oils. How much you put in is up to you!

Now that my wax is melted and smelling delightful, it’s time to pour it into the teacup, around the wick! Make sure your candle is sitting level and is somewhere where it can stay for a few hours.

Fill your tea cup about two inches from the top with wax and let it cool! And there you go! You have yourself an entirely unique candle from the look to the smell! And a Mother’s Day gift any mother will surely love! Have fun!
