Husband of Robb Elementary School Teacher, Who Died Protecting Student, Dies Just Days After His Wife

As Mamas Uncut previously reported, police, family members, and her students revealed that fourth-grade teacher Irma Garcia used her own body to shield children from bullets as a gunman barricaded himself inside her classroom killing her, a fellow teacher, and 19 of their students.

As a result of her heroic actions, Irma lost her life. And now, her husband has too.

As CNN reports, Irma and her husband, Joe Garcia, were married for nearly 25 years. They’ve known each other since the eighth grade. Together, they shared four children.

“Irma was a wife, a mother of 4, a cousin, a sister a daughter, an aunt, and a wonderful person,” a GoFundMe Campaign said describing Irma. “She would literally do anything for anybody……no questions asked. She loved her classroom kids and died trying to protect them.”

In a statement for their family, they say Joe died of a broken heart just two days after losing the love of his life. “Joe and Irma Garcia were parishioners of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde, and Irma was a leader in a woman’s ministry there,” Jordan McMorrough, a spokesperson for the archdiocese, told CNN on Thursday evening.

The archbishop met with her husband Joe shortly before his passing on Wednesday afternoon. In a GoFundMe campaign set up by Irma’s cousin, asked the world to “please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear.”

On Twitter, Irma’s nephew shared a message asking for prayers for their family after losing Joe so soon after his aunt’s tragic passing.

“Lord god please on our family, my tias husband passed away this morning due to a heart attack at home he’s with his wife now, these two will make anyone feel loved no matter what they have the purest hearts ever I love you sm tia and tio please be with me every step of the way.”

Irma and Joe started dating in high school and had been together ever since. Irma was a teacher at Robb Elementary school for almost as long as she and Joe were married.
