While hosting the third hour of the Today Show with Hoda Kotb, Jenna Bush Hager celebrated all three of her children’s first days of school.
Her youngest son, Hal, started pre-kindergarten this year and in celebration of the big day, the 5-year-old pulled a prank.
“Our kids had their first day yesterday, which went overall pretty great,” Hager told Kotb, whose daughters also started school.
“I picked Hal up and Mila was with me, and I said, ‘Hal, how was school?’” Hager admitted she was taken aback when Hal told her his day was “pretty good,” but that he was sent “to the principal’s office.”
“I was like, ‘Day one?’ I mean, the school day was like, 12 minutes,” the host admitted. “I go, ‘OK, so why did you go to the principal’s office?’”
To which Hal responded saying, “‘I squirted apple sauce.’”
Hager admitted that it was her daughter, Mila, who immediately called Hal’s bluff. “Mila looked at me like, ‘He’s lying.’”
Hager told Hal that she would eventually learned the truth when she spoke to his teacher at back-to-school night. That’s when Hal “knew he was busted,” Hager said.
He eventually confessed, admitting he was just trying to pull one over on his mom. “JK,” Hal told his mom. “I had the best day ever!’”
While showing a photo from his first day, she quipped, “That little kid told me he went to the principal’s office on day one, just as a joke.”
“Your son is already messing with you,” Hoda added.
