According to the Mayo Clinic, a D&C is a procedure that is commonly done to “prevent infection or heavy bleeding by clearing tissues that remain in the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion.” However, D&C can be medically necessary procedures in the absence of pregnancy at all, such as postmenopausal bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, or the presence of uterine polyps.

Seewald’s statement comes after a wave of backlash after she opened up about her “missed miscarriage,” which is also medically recognized as a “missed abortion.” Her statement reads:

“Women have D&Cs for many reasons, not all of which involve killing a living human being. The ultrasound revealed that I had a missed miscarriage,” Seewald wrote on her Instagram story.

“My baby’s heart had stopped beating 3 weeks before I had a D&C. Btw, this was not my first D&C- it was my second. My first was 2 weeks postpartum Ivy’s birth for retained placenta. Each person is created ‘in the image of God,’ (Gen 1:27), and to purposefully destroy a baby in the womb is an affront to the God who created that life.

There’s a world of difference between someone dying and someone being killed. To equate one to the other- and to a mother grieving the loss of her baby no less- is severely distasteful. There is a world of difference between a mortician and a murderer. Even a child understands the difference between the two.”

As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Jessa Duggar Seewald is opening up about the devastating heartbreaking she and her family recently experienced.

In a YouTube video published on her official page, the mom of four opened up about miscarrying over the holidays. The video begins with Jesse sharing footage of her and her husband Ben sharing the news that baby number five was on the way with her children.

As the video continued, Jessa described the many illnesses she and her family endured during the holiday season, which resulted in her family of six skipping several family events and just spending the season in their home together, fighting to stay healthy.

However, although Jessa was battling morning sickness and caring for her family, she grew concerned early in her pregnancy. On December 21, 2022, Jessa was 11 weeks along when she opened up about “spotting.”

The next day, at an ultrasound appointment, her doctor gave them grave news. They were told that while the “sack looked good, the baby did not.”

“Nothing could have prepared me for the weight of those words in that moment,” Jessa admitted. “I had really allowed myself to become so hopeful because the spotting had stopped. At that moment, I was just in complete shock. I didn’t have words. I just immediately started crying.”

Jesse continued saying she and Ben had just sat “there holding hands and crying, like, ‘what do we do from here.’ I feel like, in some ways, miscarriages can be so jarring because you don’t have clear signs of something going wrong. I had minimal spotting for 24 hours, and that was it.”

Shortly after receiving the news, Jessa opted to have a dilation and curettage procedure, also known as a D&C, to remove the fetus from her womb. “I was able to thank God in that moment for giving us this life, even if we wouldn’t be able to hold this baby in our arms,” the mom admitted tearfully on camera.

But despite it all, Jesse admitted to feeling “so alone” and asking herself and God what she did wrong during this pregnancy.

“Some things that I definitely was not prepared for was when we were there at the hospital, and I knew I was about to have a D&C. I had been prepped for everything. Right as they were wheeling me back, I just wanted to ask, ‘Please can I just have one more ultrasound? Please somebody check and make sure.’ I was like having all these fears that maybe they got something wrong. You know it’s irrational, you just feel scared.”

Jessa admitted that the most devastating moment for her was waking up after it was over and having the “hallow feeling inside because you know that the life that was in you is no longer there. You never did get to see your baby or say those goodbyes.”

She concluded the video by saying she was taking a social media break to heal from this devastating journey.
