Jessa Duggar Reveals Her Son Henry Has Speech Delays

On a recent episode of the reality show Counting On, Jessa (Duggar) Seewald revealed that her two-year-old son Henry is experiencing speech delays. 

The show followed Jessa and her husband Ben Seewald as they visited an ear, nose, and throat doctor with little Henry.

“He has some speech delays,” shared Jessa. “We think it might be a good idea to just have him evaluated, have his hearing checked, and see what they think we should do next.”

The couple, who also have a 4-year-old son Spurgeon and a 5-month-old daughter Ivy, realized that at 18-months Henry “wasn’t communicating like his older brother did at that age, or like other kids his age.”

“We realize that each kid develops at their own pace, but he’s not been really catching on. He’s not really able to talk and communicate what he wants. A lot of the times it’s just grunts and pointing and that kind of thing.”

For the past few months we have been trying to do better about having regular family devotions. Sometimes we block out time for it in the morning, and sometimes we do it at night, just before bed. . The boys have loved learning new songs! We sing the same hymn (first verse & chorus) several times a day for a week straight, before moving on to a new song. They pick it up so fast! Usually by the third day, they have it down. ???????????????????????? It’s been so sweet to hear their little voices singing these song around the house during the day. And when we go to church, Spurgeon has asked “Are we going to sing our song today?” . We have also been doing some scripture memory for a few minutes each day, adding in a new verse every week or so. We add hand motions to the verse, and that helps us all remember. Sometimes we also recite a bit from the Baptist catechism for kids. . For Bible stories, we have been using “The Big Picture Story Bible” by David Helm. The boys love the illustrations and they never forget to ask for a story before bed! . Sometimes we miss days, but it’s helpful to have a goal—something we’re striving for! . I’d love to hear from some of you! The reality star mom shared that she worries about her son’s development.

“I feel like especially as a mom, it’s easier for me to kind of stress out, like, ‘Oh no, he’s delayed. What’s wrong with him? And Ben is a little more level-headed, like, ‘It’ll be okay, we’ll figure it out.’”

Thankfully, Henry’s hearing is not of concern and the couple received helpful feedback from the doctor.

Made our favorite pancakes for the second time this week. ☺️ My mom used to make this recipe for us growing up! I’ve always loved them so much that I would eat them by themselves— no maple syrup or anything— and Henry does the same. ???????????? We made up some extras this time to have on hand for a quick snack. ???? . Swipe left to see the recipe! It’s from boschmixers.com. If you have a quality, high-speed blender (Bosch, Vitamix, Blendtec, etc), you can make the recipe as is— putting the whole wheat kernel straight into the blender! . I don’t have a blender with the ability to grind the wheat kernel, so I just use whole wheat flour instead. 1 cup of wheat kernels = 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour. . We just mix the ingredients by hand. The boys love getting to stir everything together. ????

“We were very happy to hear that Henry’s hearing is not an issue. His hearing is perfect. Developmentally, he’s not behind, he’s on track with where he should be. It just seems to be a speech issue. So at this point, she’s recommended that we see a speech pathologist and go from there.”
