John Cena Explains Why He Keeps His Marriage Private: “Some Things Are Worth Keeping to Yourself”

John Cena doesn’t talk about his marriage to Shay Shariatzadeh often, but offered some rare sound bites about their relationship during an interview with Hoda Kotb on the TODAY show. The interview, which occurred on May 15, came just a few days before the release of Fast X – which Cena appears in.

When asked why he and his wife choose to keep their relationship out of the limelight, Cena responded with a simple, yet meaningful answer. “Some things are worth keeping to yourself,” he told Kotb – who went on to ask what he loves most about her. Again, Cena offered a short, but heartwarming answer.

“That she loves me for who I am, and I love her for exactly who she is,” Cena explained – adding that he and his wife believe in ‘keeping our information to us and those extremely close to our inner circle.’ It’s one of the many core values they share as a couple and is one of the things they pride themselves in.

John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh first started making headlines after they were spotted on a dinner date in Canada in March 2019 – photos of the dinner date showed the couple holding hands while walking. The date came roughly one year after Cena broke things off with his ex-fiancé, Nikki Bella, in July 2018.

The couple were spotted several more times throughout 2019 – they weren’t shy about their PDA at the San Diego Airport in April 2019, attended a WWE Raw taping in Tampa Bay in July 2019, and made their official red carpet debut in October 2019 at the premiere of Playing With Fire – which Cena starred in.

In 2020, things started to take a more serious turn. They weren’t shy about kissing in front of the cameras at the premiere of Dolittle in January 2020, but speculation of a potential engagement arose in February 2020 when Shariatzadeh was reportedly seen wearing a ‘pretty big’ ring on her left hand ring finger.

They fell under the radar for the next eight months before shocking fans with a major announcement – the couple secretly married on October 12, 2020 and were excited about their new life together. They’ve enjoyed that life ever since and even had a second, more proper wedding ceremony in July 2022.

Is John Cena Interested in Having Children?

One of the primary reasons why Nikki Bella decided to call off her engagement to John Cena was because she wasn’t convinced that he truly wanted to start a family with her. Considering it led to their break up, many people are wondering if things are any different with his marriage to Shay Shariatzadeh.

In January 2022, Cena appeared to shoot down the idea of having children while on The Drew Barrymore Show. “I think just because you might be good at something, for me, is not a strong enough reason to do that,” he said of being a parent – adding that it’s something you have to have a ‘passion’ and ‘fuel’ for.

While he seemed pretty sure of himself at the time, his answer started to change seven months later when a US Weekly source confirmed the couple have thought about starting a family. According to the source, Cena has been ‘warming up to the idea more and more’ – though this wasn’t confirmed by them.

“They’ll go with the flow but it’s different with Shay, he feels wiser and more ready for the responsibility. It’s something they’d both love, for sure,” the source continued. The couple have kept a very low profile ever since and have only been spotted a couple times – his most recent comments are a rare occurrence.
