Over the past 26 years, John Ramsey has impatiently waited for investigators to solve the mystery of his daughter’s death. And for 26 years, he has seen a revolving door of ‘incompetent’ police officers ‘bungle’ the investigation – all while being viewed as one of the primary suspects for more than a decade.
In a new true-crime documentary, Ramsey is speaking out about the investigators who haven’t done much since that fateful night in 1996 – when Ramsey’s six-year-old daughter, JonBenét Ramsey, was found dead in the family’s basement. He speaks candidly about the investigation but remains hopeful.
The documentary, titled Suburban Nightmare: JonBenét Ramsey, premiered on December 21st on Tubi and comes after months of speaking with local and national media about the disappointment he feels in the way authorities have handled the case – he even spoke at CrimeCon 2022 in Las Vegas this year.

So, why speak up now? Well, John Ramsey dreams of the day this mystery is solved, once and for all, and he wants that day to come during his lifetime. At 79 years old, he doesn’t know how much time he has left and is urging the government to take more aggressive measures to finally identify the murderer.
He received a small victory in November when local authorities enlisted the assistance of a state cold case team – a move made in an effort to get the case out of the hands of the Boulder Police Department. It’s the same department he’s accusing of incompetence and a lack of commitment to the case.
With the number of technological advancements – including advancements in DNA and genetic genealogy – made in the past few decades, John Ramsey is hopeful that a competent team of investigators can uncover new details that were originally missed. He wants justice for his daughter.
“All we’re asking for the government to do is to utilize the latest technology to test the samples that have not been tested for DNA. And then, if we recover DNA that’s unidentified, take that new DNA sample to the public database, which has been used to solve lots of cold cases today,” said Ramsey to Fox News.
John Ramsey Opens Up About the Support His Family Has Received
What John Ramsey and his family were forced to go through back in 1996 was something no two parents should ever experience in their lifetime. One thing that has helped him overcome the slew of emotions he feels on a regular basis is the incredible amount of continued support he and his family have received.
“All the accusations that the family faced, it was noise compared to the pain we were suffering from the loss of our child. You can’t hurt me anymore… But we also had a lot of support from the very beginning. People would always stop us on the street and say, ‘I’m so sorry’ and give us big hugs,” said Ramsey.
The 79-year-old recounted a time when a taxi driver stopped his car in front of his wife, Patsy, to give her a hug and share his condolences. “He blocked traffic just to give his condolences. We were just overwhelmed by the people who would approach us… It was very uplifting for us,” explained Ramsey.
