More than two months after Julian Sands was reported missing by his wife, Eugenia Citkowitz, the actor’s whereabouts remain unknown. According to reports, searches for Sands have continued over the last 10 weeks.
It’s still unclear what happened to the 65-year-old who allegedly went on a hike on Mount Baldy, known for its dangerous terrain, and never returned.

Sixty-five-year-old actor, Julian Sands, was reported missing on January 13th after hiking up Mount Baldy – a dangerous hike in the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, he was reported missing at 7:30 p.m. and a search for Sands is ongoing.
“A search crew was sent out, but because of weather conditions, they were pulled on Saturday. Helicopters and drones will be out there to continue to search, weather permitting,” SBCSD Corporal Nathan Campos told PEOPLE. Unfortunately, the weather has continued to disrupt search and rescue crews.
While they’ve been limited in what they can do on the ground – primarily due to trail conditions and the risk of an avalanche – crews have taken advantage of helicopters and drones whenever the weather permits. They haven’t turned anything – or anyone – up yet, but will not give up on their search and hopeful rescue.

Julian Sands began his acting career with small, supporting roles in the early-1980s, but received his first big break as the romantic lead in A Room With a View. He was also known for his roles in The Killing Fields, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena, and Leaving Las Vegas throughout the 80s and 90s.
Sands was married to journalist Sarah Harvey for three years in the mid-1980s and they share one child together. After his separation from Harvey, Sands married Evgenia Citkowitz in 1990 and the two have been married ever since. The couple shares two children together.
Julian Sands was a dedicated mountain climber and enjoyed hiking whenever he had the time – and that’s exactly what he was doing when he went missing. His family grew worried after he didn’t return from his hike later that day – at which point, his wife contacted the police and reported him missing.
Several outlets have reported that Sands’ three children joined in on the search, though authorities are urging people to avoid executing their own searches due to the severe weather conditions. While Sands has been missing for six days now, the family is maintaining hope that their loved one will prevail.
Julian Sands is Just One of Many Victims at Mount Baldy
Leading up to Julian Sands’ missing persons report, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department issued a stern warning to hikers as weather conditions continued to grow worse in the surrounding area. Unfortunately, Sands’ disappearance is just one of more than a dozen to occur in the past four weeks.
“Over the last four weeks, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Teams responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt Baldy and in the surrounding area,” the SBCSD said on Facebook, adding that the missions were for lost, stranded, and/or injured hikers – two of those hikers didn’t survive and they’re currently searching for one other man.
Just a few days ago, Crystal Paula Gonsalez-Landas passed away after sliding to her death on a nearby hike. Known as ‘the dancing hiking queen,’ she took a video of her hike for her Facebook followers prior to the incident. A GoFundMe account has been created to help her family pay for funeral expenses.

This isn’t just a 2023 thing, either. Three years ago, in December 2019, a 52-year-old man was reported missing after being separated while hiking with a group. A search ensued, but a police officer fell to his death and the search was called off. His remains were found four months later after the snow melted.
