Earlier this week, Justin Bieber announced that he would be postponing his current tour due to an undisclosed illness. Now, on Consequence, Bieber is opening up about the rare diagnosis.
According to a video the pop star shared on Instagram, he revealed that he has been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome. As Mayo Clinic revealed, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, also known as herpes zoster oticus, “occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears.”
“In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.”

Mayo Clinic further reveals that his disorder is more common in those who have suffered from chickenpox as a child.
“As you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves,” the pop singer said in the Instagram video. “As you can see, this eye is not blinking, I can’t smile on this side of my face, this nostril will not move. So there’s full paralysis on this side of my face.”
Bieber addressed his decision to cancel his upcoming shows as well. “So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically not capable of doing them.”
The singer continued, saying, “This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but obviously, my body’s telling me I gotta slow down and I hope you guys understand.”
It’s unclear what this means for Justin in the future. However, he says he is hopeful that he will regain movement in the one side of his face. He says he’s been doing facial exercises in an effort to “get my face back to normal.”
The Biebers had a rough go with their health recently. As Mamas Uncut recently reported, Justin’s wife, Hailey, was recently hospitalized after suffering a mini-stroke.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Hailey Bieber revealed that she “was sitting at breakfast with my husband when I started having stroke-like symptoms and was taken to the hospital.”
As the model continued to explain, the doctors discovered the source of her symptoms. “They found I had suffered a very small blood clot to my brain, which caused a small lack of oxygen,” Hailey revealed.
Luckily, Hailey continued to say that her body “passed [the clot] on its own,” and she “recovered completely within a few hours.”
